25 Mar How Giving Can Go Wrong – and Hurt Your Business
When I talk about the Three Keys to an Abundant Business (Ask Powerfully, Give Wholeheartedly, and Receive Graciously), people always assume that “giving” is the most joyous part.
After all, haven’t we heard our whole lives about how good we will feel when we give? Consider these quotes from famous people who seem to know what they’re talking about:
“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” ?H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“The best thing to do with the best things in life is to give them away.” —Dorothy Day
“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” —Booker T. Washington
Awww! Sounds like a golden egg, doesn’t it? Just give and a wonderful life awaits.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Giving can be fraught with problems. Have you ever given so much in your business that it hurt your bottom line? Does giving sometimes feel like an obligation? How about the times that you want to give, but it’s not accepted? That doesn’t feel so wonderful.
To create more abundance in your business, give what you want. For instance, you can give referrals if you want referrals. You can support others if you want support. You can even give money away to receive more money. What you’re doing is creating more of what you want in the universe. (I have a really good story about how I donated money and then got a house, which I’ll tell during next week’s masterclass.)
What you should NOT do is give your services away for free or a deep discount. You should not give time to a client who doesn’t appreciate it. That will never result in creating more of what you want in your business!
